 Biography:  Please report missing Information

1955 Born in Strijen (NL)

In 1972, fascinated by the musical world, he took his first photographs during a live concert. In 1979 his love for music induced him to transfer to London where he entered into immediate contact with the most original bands and sound of the time (Post Punk, Joy Division, Magazine, PIL Ltd., etc.). Love for music and love for photography.

After 1985 he photographed principally personalities from the world of show business, both for his own private research and for numerous reviews and magazines (Vogue, Rolling Stones, Details, Icon, The Independent Magazine, W Magazine, Harpers Bazaar, LA Style, Entertainment Weekly, Stern, Wiener, Actuel, Elle, Glamour, Max). There appeared his first portraits of musicians and actors (U2, REM, Lee Hooker, Ferry, Rolling Stones, Cave, Depeche Mode, etc.) At the same time he began to direct his first video-clips (more than 60 so far) for widely disparate artists (Nirvana, Joni Mitchell, Front 242, Henry Rollins, Metallica, Naomi Campbell, Depeche Mode, Johnny Cash, U2, David Silvian, Nick Cave).
In 1994 he made a short for the BBC entitled “Some Yo Yo Stuff”.
He received an MTV award for the video of Nirvana’s “Heart Shaped Box”.
In 1994 he won the Dutch Photography Award.
In 1998 he took part in the campain for the re-election of the Dutch Prime Minister Wim Kok, also working in advertising (BMW and Tag Heuer).

He has published 5 books: Famouz (1989), Allegro (1991), Star Trak (1996), 33 Still Lives (1999), Werk (2000).

In CORBIJN’s photos, his subjects seem distracted, solemn, smiling perhaps but still worn down by the burdens of their celebrity. They are pictured as serious people, caught in quiet moments, far removed from their high-powered stage personas. “I’m a very, very basic photographer”, CORBIJN says. “The main strength of my pictures, I guess, is the mood and feel I get out of the people that I meet. But technically I don’t think I’m very advanced. That never interested me...” His secret? “A Hasselblad, two lenses, one bag, and me.”

Photography for CORBIJN has always represented a quest for the opportunity of rupture. In making photographs, CORBIJN struggled not just against the elusiveness of the real, but against the elusiveness of the real within the jumble of delusion created by the flood of imagery. At a time when authenticity as a revolutionary concept had long been derided, CORBIJN unwaveringly and courageously entered a battle he could only loose - a battle against the predominance of soullessly and mechanically manufactured images of man. He was looking for the beauty and the truth of man, well aware that they could not exist but in the realm of emotional perception. The fact that his subjects in this pursuit were people who on the stage or on the screen were in fact able to control and channel those very emotions complicated his task.
