1893 Born in Venlo (NL)

Bouten’s bohemian life was in sharp contrast to his strict Catholic upbringing in a seminary in the southern Netherlands. As soon as he had graduated as an art teacher in Amsterdam he set out with his young wife and fellow painter, Hanny Korevaar, to see the world. Attracted by the cosmopolitan atmosphere of the major European cities, he spent periods in Budapest, Berlin, Marseilles and Paris, between 1920 and 1935, before finally settling in Brussels in 1935, where he was to live until his return to Amsterdam in 1957. Bouten preferred to work on his own and had little to do with other artists and, despite his subsequent rediscovery by the Amsterdam art dealer Adriaan Venema, in the early 1980’s, there is still a very great deal about this unusual artist that we do not know.

Herman Kruijder was the only artist in The Netherlands with whom Bouten felt any kind of affinity and during his years in Paris he is known to have associated with Russian emigrés such as Chagall, Larionov and Gontcharova. New Works by Bouten are continually coming onto the market, in particular from Berlin, and these are finding favour with a growing group of Bouten enthusiasts. Bouten’s work is typical of the cosmopolitan existence enjoyed by the artists of the inter-war period. His oeuvre is original, worldly-wise and erotic, and often shows the angular lines which characterize German Expressionism. On his return to Amsterdam he did a fascinating series of drawings as an affectionate tribute to the red light district of Amsterdam and which recall the grandeur of the drawings of German artsists such as Georg Gross and Otto Dix
