Biography: ![]() 26.8.1973 Born in Amersham, England (UK) Ben Young Artist Statement Central St Martin's School Of Art And Design In Young's art he currently takes inspiration from city walls and other public surfaces. Young likes the way they look, their overall aesthetic that has been built up over time and contributed to by countless anonymous authors and artists. The places we're supposed to look are all filled with Advertising, the places we're not supposed to look are filled with a different kind of advertising; that of the disenfranchised. Young likes the tension between the confessional daubings, scrawlings and sprayings with their almost private intimations and the fact that they've been done in a very public space. What Young sees around him is a lot of absurdity but he knows and feels that life has meaning, so what could it be? This doubt and anxiety is the basis of Young's work. He enjoys the juxtaposition of incongruous images and the sense of absurdity this produces. Young likes the tension in life between opposites - beauty and ugliness, happiness and sadness etc - and he wants to reproduce this in his art. The subject matter of Young's art is the reality of being a person in this extraordinarily cruel but beautiful world.
