Bridget Smith works with large-scale colour photographs which are infused with an illusive sense of fantasy and escapism. As her earlier works of the interiors of movie theaters give an impression of surreal artifice, so do her photographs of replica of historical buildings that were reconstructed for Las Vegas Hotels. Her recent series was shot on a trip through Japan, showing facades of bars as well as the decoration of hotel rooms which are turned into a completely artificial world, where illusion and kitsch reign.
