Biography:
3.5.1928 Born in Papendrecht, ZH (NL)
Carel Visser is a sculptor with an adventurous spirit. Over a period of more than 50 years he has produced sculptures, relieves, drawings, collages and woodcuts of an astonishing diversity both in terms of form and material. Visser made his name in the 1950’s with welded iron sculptures: starting with subtle animal figures, later moving on to robust compositions using geometrical forms. In the 1960’s and 70's he began to work with other materials: first thin sheet iron and leather and later with materials taken from nature and objets trouvés.
Yet, despite all its diversity, his work in the period 1914-1916 also reveals certain constant characteristics: a strong affinity with nature and an attention to fundamental sculptural problems, which find expression in the careful way he creates the links between the individual parts of each sculpture, and between the sculpture and the ground.
This makes him a worthy heir to classic masters of 20th century sculpture such as Brancusi and Giacometti, of whom he is a great admirer. Visser’s work has been exhibited on many occasions both in the Netherlands and abroad and is included in the collections of a number of major museums. He belongs to a select group among the most important European sculptors of the post-war period.
