"l tend to be interested, for my own purposes, in things I find on the street or things drawn on toillet walls or things drawn by someone I meet in a bar..."
Each one of Donald Baechler´s works is a declaration in favour of the hybrid. Generally, he juxtaposes acrylic paints mixed with oil and papier collés on the same canvas to make assemblages. This technique becomes a distinguishing feature of an "aesthetic of mixing", which is intended to permeate or overcome the gulf between different styles and genres. The spirit of appropriation lies at the basis or Baechler´s art. In paintings characteristic of 1980s and 90s Postmodernism, he combines Expressionism and Bad Painting, references and quotations, art brut and naive painting, high and low, realism, gestural painting and flat masses of colour. Quotations, borrowings and historical references form the basis of a body of work that singles out these diverse elements in order to underline their eclecticism. (...) His series of flowers, fruits, trees, balls or simple geometric forms are painted with affected clumsiness and a bogus naivety. In this way, his work develops a "aesthetic of simplicity" and pays ironic tribute to a kind of primitivism, which is meant to cast doubt on, and overturn, what Baechler considers to be academic conventions and the affectations of Minimalist and Conceptual Art.
