Biography: 
1951 Born in Asheville, NC (US)
Born in North Carolina, USA, Sultan studied at the University of North Carolina. Not too long after receiving his MA in 1975 from the Art School of the University of Chicago, Sultan exhibited at the Whitney Biennale in 1979. Sultan's work has been dubbed New Image Painting in which he uses materials often used in architecture, such as linoleum, asphalt, and plaster. His subjects are animals, objects or landscape surrounding him. Both with his painting and prints, and as we see in his piece entitled "Black Lemon," Sultan's use of black is prominent.
