Biography:

1965 Born in Reims (FR)

Gaston Bertin grew up in Barcelona and studied in The United States. He has been creating abstract photographs since his studies at the Parsons School of Design in New York, during the 80's. This research has become his main activity, although he is still working on a more classical type of photographs. Colour is the main element of his abstract production. His creations have evolved, influenced by his studies, trips and professional activity. In the beginning, he only used traditionnal techniques at first, printing himself his photographes from his negatives. Today, even if using a numeric camera, it hasn't modified his work method. His camera's lens is still his main mean to catch and to manipulate light. He takes photos of paper-made constructions, playing on perspective and focussing. As a result , pictures emerge, without any post-manipulation. Colours, points, lines, strokes, rounds : pictures come and go, without looking at each others. The technique is always the same, using cutted pieces of colored papers, glued and taken into photos. « I take photos to see what I saw. To make people see. To touch people. Some light into life. Light without shadow. Time stopping, an eternity for a little longer. To take a photo is to create a future to a direct satisfaction is the outcome of a ritual in which I am looking for a truth in the unknown. We only see once. I don't take photos, I look. As I'm looking, I imagine.
