1893 Born in Amstelveen (NL)

Gerrits received his first lessons from his father and continued his training at the Tekenschool voor Kunstambachten in Amsterdam. Before the Second World War his work was figurative, or more precisely, in the spirit of the Neue Sachlichkeit. Even more than in the case of his friend Willy Boers, the war awakened in him the expectation of a new, ideal society in which the arts, labour and the community would flow together and in which abstraction would become the dominant art form.

Immediately after the war he was a driving force behind numerous artists’ associations of which the most important were «Vrij Beelden» and «Creatie». He was also an active defender of the interests of other artists.

His three monumental works for the much talked-about «Vrij Beelden» exhibition in the Amsterdam Fodor Museum in 1949, including «Rijzend Element» shown on this website, are still seen as a worthy, post-war continuation of Mondriaan and «De Stijl».

1965 Died in Amsterdam (NL)
