Biography:
Born in Heidelberg (DE)
Gerhard R. Braun was born in Heidelberg, Germany and studied architecture and film in Berlin. In addition to his
work in urban architectural photography and filmmaking, Braun has participated in anthropological excavations
in Spain, Portugal and Syria. His photography has been exhibited throughout Europe and Asia, and has appeared
in numerous publications on architecture and film. He has been honored with several film awards and ratings. He
teaches at the Universität der Künste in Berlin.
His documentary panoramic photographs of urban spaces and architecture from the last two decades were shot with analog equipment and photographed predominatly in black and white. He focuses our attention on situations which, in their meeting of architecture and urban use, exist only in big cities. The result of the relationship of the unwitting participants and the emptiness of the urban spaces he portrays often results in a paradoxically staged atmosphere.
The selected scenes of urban life also picture the specific character of the cities portrayed.
