Biography:
1966 Born in Sidcup, London (Kent), England (UK)
Ian Davenport studied at Goldsmith's College in London, one of the now fabled generation of artists who graduated from there in the late 1980's. He took part in the celebrated exhibition Freeze, curated by Damien Hirst, in the summer of 1988 and has since exhibited extensively across the world. His last exhibition in Scotland was at Dundee Contemporary Arts in 1999 - this is the first time that his work has been shown in a private gallery in Scotland.
Davenport has always been interested in the process of making paintings, in the physical activity of pouring and manipulating paint, and in the action of liquid and gravity across the surface of a picture. He makes his very personal brand of abstract paintings by literally tipping paint onto a prepared board, and then flipping or angling it to push the paint in his chosen direction. It is a balancing act that moves from accident to polished perfection with each new series of paintings as Davenport learns how far he can push his materials. This element of balance and push creates a tension at the edges of his paintings, which seem so simple, and yet which are the result of both a learning process and intense physical activity.
