Biography:
1865 Born in Amsterdam (NL)
Isaac Israels received his initial artistic training from his father, the legendary Jozef Israels (1824-1911) and went on to study at the Academie voor Beeldende Kunsten in The Hague from 1880 to 1882 and at the Rijksacademie in Amsterdam from 1886 to 1887. At the age of 16 the child prodigy Israels was already painting virtuoso pieces with largely military subjects. It was not until he had tasted the atmosphere of the Dutch literary movement known as the «Tachtigers» (the generation of the 1880’s) in Amsterdam, that the spark was struck which would convert Israels into the greatest Dutch impressionist.
The work of his contemporary Breitner played a key role in Israels’s artistic development. In the early 1890’s Breitner enjoyed a series of triumphant successes, which often drove the ambitious Israels, a great admirer of Breitner, to despair although their rivalry did not prevent the two men from becoming firm friends as well. While Breitner may have enjoyed more success in their day, Israels’ choice of humanity as his subject, and by his attractive reporting style has proved today the more successful, even though his contemporary Breitner, may arguably have been the greater artist.
Israels travelled extensively in Europe and Indonesia and spent a long time in Paris. He was known principally as a painter of contemporary life in the street in parks, factories, shops and the theatre.
