1934 Born in Berkeley, CA (US)
McCracken's work can be called Minimalism. But his work is colourful and its smooth and coloured surface implies a certain sensuality that is alien to the work of people like Carl Andre and Robert Morris.
Techniques 1960 - 1980 The foundations of John McCracken's formal vocabulary were laid in the mid-1960s, in parallel with the work of such artists as Carl Andre, Donald Judd and Larry Bell. His quest for the distillation of the work of art led him to make monochrome geometric volumes that directly occupy the space. In 1966 he arrived at the form for which he is best-known, the "plank": a simple elongated form standing on the floor and leaning against the wall. At the same time as these "planks" he was also making freestanding columnar forms and geometric volumes whose singleness was their most important feature.
1980 - 2000 In the late Eighties and around 2000 he did a series of pieces in polished stainless steel worked by machines. They are completely reflective and mirror the surroundings and the viewer. They seem to examine the surrounding space, turn it inside out and cut a segment out of it. Some of them are set in outdoor locations by their owners. They then reflect the natural landscape and almost become absorbed into their environment. But in most cases they are shown in enclosed private and museum spaces, where they absorb the architecture around them.
