João Paulo Feliciano (Caldas da Rainha, 1963)
Artist, musician and designer.
JPF graduated in linguistics and modern literature at the Lisbon Classical University in 1986. Since 1984, he has developed a prolific and multi-directional body of work, often blurring the lines between art, music, design, multimedia, architecture… As a visual artist his work spans a broad spectrum of media: installation, video, sculpture, complex objects, collage, photography, painting… He has exhibited in Portugal, Spain, Germany, Belgium, England, sharing exhibition space with artists such as Bruce Nauman, James Turrell, Dan Graham, Brian Eno, Christian Marclay, Lawrence wiener, etc… He his represented in most public contemporary art collections in Portugal.
As a musician he has played rock, improvised, electronic, experimental, sample based, dj); Performed in Portugal, Germany, Spain, Brazil and USA, and collaborated with Lee Ranaldo, David Toop, Roger Klyer, and Phil Niblock among others. Since 1991 he collaborates with long-time friend Rafael Toral under the name of No Noise Reduction. He has played twice as support for Sonic Youth –with his rock’n’roll band Tina & the top Ten (Lisbon, 1993) and with No Noise Reduction (Lisbon, 1999). He has also collaborated with Sonic Youth, designing artwork and putting out the semi-official live album “Blastic Scene – (SY live in Lisbon, 93).
In his many collaborative and group projects João Paulo Feliciano has worked as graphic and communication designer; lighting and mixed media designer; art director, curator and event organizer.
In 1994, together with his brother (type designer) Mário Feliciano, founded the graphic design studio Secretonix. In 1998 art directed the outdoor multimedia show Acqua Matrix for Expo’ 98. For this monumental work (seen by over 5 million) he collaborated with people has diverse as musician/composer David Toop, stage architect Mark Fisher or Colour Magazine editors’ Charles Thompson & Alex Marashian.
In 1999 he conceived and directed the Houseware Experience, a project for live mixed media explorations that included international participations such as The Apolloprogram, Amon Tobin, Burnt Friedmann and D-Fuse. In 2000 he participated in the exhibition Sonic Boom (Hayward Gallery, London) with an installation developed with Rafael Toral.
In 2004 he presents a series of new works in the Serralves Museum of Contemporary Art and participated in the XXVI São Paulo Biennial
Between 2000 and 2001 he was a programming consultant for the CAM/ACARTE Gulbenkian Foundation in the field of music and new media.
Between 2000 and 2003 he was co-director of Experimenta association (headed by Guta Mora Guedes). He is part of the curatorial board for Experimentadesign – the Lisbon Biennial.
For 2005 he is preparing a series of projects for several museums and contemporary art centres: MAC, Santiago, Chile; CCBB, Rio De Janeiro, Brazil; CAC, Cincinnati, USA
