22.11.1881 Born in Woerden, ZH (NL)

Leo Gestel received his first lessons from his father W. Gestel (1853-1952) and went on to continue his training at the Rijksnormaalschool and Rijksacademie in Amsterdam from 1900 to 1903. His friends nicknamed him «Leonardo» because of his great skills as a draughtsman. Indeed, Gestel and Toorop were undeniably the best draughtsmen of their generation, followed closely by Piet van der Hem. After completing his studies Gestel travelled extensively in Europe. His interpretation of Cubism between 1913 and 1920 was an important impulse for the emergence of modern art in The Netherlands. Together with Jan Sluijters he was one of the most important innovators in The Netherlands at that time. He was also a leading figure of the Bergen School. His refined feeling for rhythm and colour composition gives his works a uniquely elevated appearance. Gestel was one of the most important pre-war Dutch painters and an expert adviser to major collectors of modern art, such as his contemporary Regnault, founding father of the Stedelijk Museum in Amsterdam.

26.11.1941 Died in Hilversum, NH (NL)
