Lucebert

15.9.1924 Born in Amsterdam, NH (NL)

Lucebert’s father had a painting and decorating business in De Jordaan, one of the poorer districts of Amsterdam at that time. He originally followed a commercial training, but his interest in language and drawing awakened in him a need to follow an artistic education. In 1938 he began taking drawing lessons in the Kunstnijverheidsschool in Amsterdam, but gave up after half a year. After the Second World War he led a rootless existence. He began writing poetry in 1945, and due to the experimental nature of his poems and the absence of rhyme, he became very famous.

In his capacity as the first experimental poet, he became one of the founding members of the «CoBrA» group in 1948 and exhibited as a poet and draughtsman during the group’s first exhibition in the Stedelijk Museum in Amsterdam. He received his first literary award in 1954 and was later to win the prestigious P.C. Hooft prize for literature in 1968. From 1952 he lived and worked in Bergen, in North Holland.

Neither his drawings, nor his paintings can be classified as belonging to any one particular style. His subjects are often of a light-hearted nature and are characterized by a strong orientation towards freedom and experimentation. Comparisons with German artists such as Klee and Ernst suggest themselves, partly as a result of Lucebert’s own preference for German literature, while the aesthetic influence of the French painters Dubuffet and Picasso is also very noticeable.
1948 - 1951 member of CoBrA
