Digital C-print, Diasec face mount on 3 mm non-reflective gallery Plexi, Dibond backing and back brace Edition of 6: (2) 100 x 127 cm, (2) 70 x 100 cm, (2) 50 x 70 cm In his series of mountains and caves, Kessler documents sublime images of the deep, dark settings of our primordial myths. Virtually untouched by human hands, these geological wonders feel foreign, alien, and unfamiliar, while at the same time they exist as some of the most basic natural formations in nature, making all the more apparent man’s own detachment from the natural world.

Diasec face mount on 3 mm non-reflective gallery Plexi, Dibond backing and back brace Edition of 6: (2) 120 X 170 cm, (2) 100 X 157 cm, (2) 70 X 110 cm In 2007, Kessler embarked on an expedition to explore the Arctic Seas, where he produced his sublime images of ice lit by high-powered Hollywood cinematic lighting. In the dark stillness of night, far away from smog and light pollution, ideal conditions are met to obtain the best optical view, for small particles of dust at this hour rise in the atmosphere, while larger ones fall to the ground. The larger-than-life iceberg formations emerge as a stage with no actors, creating eerie, plastic images so dramatically detailed that the viewer is left questioning the reality behind the image.

    The Taste of Discovery

Perfume, with scents of sweat, diesel, motor oil, rancid clothing Recollected scents from the Greenland Expedition bottled exclusively for Kunstraum Dornbirn, on the occasion of Mathias Kessler’s The Taste of Discovery exhibition, developed in collaboration with Parfumier Christophe Laudamiel and Scent Advisor Kóan Jeff Baysa, M.D. Kessler recreates his experiences while on an Arctic boating voyage, which shifted between extreme hot and cold, inside and outside of the boat. These conditions are brought to life in two conditions in two adjacent rooms: one inhabiting a large mirror that continuously shifts between phases of freezing and melting. In the other a large compressor producing the cooling agent for the mirror outputs a great deal of heat and noise, acting as the belly of the boat.

Installation: 10 x 20 x 20 cm 3D model, mini-fridge with freezer compartment, and 3D chrome custom automotive emblem Edition of 3 Kessler has recreated a 3D-printed model of Caspar David Friedrich’s famous painting, housed in the freezer compartment of a mini-fridge. The refrigerator is stocked with beer, and the artist invites viewers to drink from the fridge and engage in discussion. The opening and closing of the fridge helps continue the life cycle of the ice sculpture, while the beer facilitates comradery and intellectual exchange, creating a social sculpture in the process.

    Nowhere to Be Found

Site-specific installation, Volta Art Fair, Galerie Heike Strelow Aquarium tank, human skull, various live corals, LED light with UV spectrum, saltwater filter, pump, plumbing, and wooden pedestal 48 cm x 44 cm x 175 cm Edition of 5 Nowhere to Be Found (2010) is placed in a field of tensions: a human skull is suspended in a saltwater tank, on which corals have been implanted. Over several years, the seawater will dissolve the skull, and the coral will feed on its calcium, forming a coral reef, artificially initiating the natural life cycle and transformation process within the installation.
