Biography:
Sandeep Bhagwati is a composer, multidisciplinary artist and curator.
After studies in conducting and composition at the Mozarteum Salzburg
(Austria) (1984-87), he received his "Kuenstlerische Reifepruefung" in Composition in 1990 from Munich Music University (Germany). In 1991, he co-founded in Munich the "A*DEvantgarde Festival", and was its director until 1995. He has served as artistic director with several other festivals since. From 1995-98, he was composer at IRCAM in Paris, and was also Composer-in-residence at Fondation Royaumont, ZKM Center for Art and Media Karlsruhe, IEM Institute for Electronic Music Graz and Beethoven Orchestra Bonn. From 2000-2003, he was Professor for Composition at Karlsruhe Music University (Germany). Professor Bhagwati has received numerous prestigious awards and scholarships (e.g. European Composition Prize, Ernst-von-Siemens-Prize). His creative work, while rooted in concert music and music theatre (5 operas), often transcends disciplines and genres, and he has installed large scale works at prestigious venues in Paris, Berlin, Vienna, Ulm, Klagenfurt, Linz and elsewhere. His compositions are regularly performed by major artists and featured at major festivals and venues worldwide. His numerous essays mainly focus on how cultural globalization interacts with known aesthetic strategies. He has recently been appointed Canada Research Chair at Concordia University Montréal, where he will install "matra", a lab for interdisciplinary, intercultural, intermedia and interactive art and produce a new sound theatre show "PER/SON/ALIA" in March 2007.
