1955 Born in (DE)

Born in Germany, an American citizen, Sharon Kivland divides her life between London and France. She has shown widely over many years in Britain, Europe, and North America.

Recent projects include A Case Of Hysteria, published in 1999 by Book Works, London, which takes up the work already presented in Aphonia, CAPC de St. Fons, France, in 1994, a speculation on Freud's analysis of 'Dora', and The School for Lovers, Site Gallery, Sheffield, 1998, which is accompanied by a book of the same title, a reconfiguration of Mozart's opera Cosi fan tutte. The latter frames her book in progress, an investigation of the psychic relations between the work of art and its viewer.

She is currently preparing a series of works on the city and gender, bringing together works from 1995, 1997, and 1998 with new works. One of these, Mes Péripatéticiennes (My Streetwalkers), was shown at The Economist Building in March 2000, as a Contemporary Arts Society project; another, La Valeur d'Echange, was shown at the Centre d'Art Contemporain de Rueil-Malmaison in 1999. An artist's book, titled Les Passages Couverts, also part of this series, was published in the collection RDM10, in 1998, and was recently shown at the Bibliotheque Nationale in Paris. Le Bonheur des Femmes (the scent of a woman), was shown at Portfolio Gallery, during the Edinburgh Festival, at Galerie Vu in Quebec City, as part of Manifestation, the first Quebec Biennial of Contemporary International Art, in Galerie La Centrale/Powerhouse in Montreal, and at Le Triangle in Rennes, during 2000 -2001 Filgrane Editions has recently published a catlogue of this work.

She showed new works at Galerie Bugdahn & Kaimer in Dusseldorf, and Galerie Lilian Rodriguez in Montreal, in 2001, as well as at art fairs in Basel and Turin. She is also working on Diderot's love letters to Sophie Volland, which continue to haunt her. A recent work in this series, Tête àTete, showed in Jeux d'Amour, curated by Hybrid. A continuing series of photographic works, Mes Fils, has been shown recently at Konst och Kultur in Stockholm, as part of a group exhibition, Loving at Home. She is one of eight artists who took part in Making History, a site-based project organised by Staffordshire University - her site was St. Edward's Hospital, a former asylum, for which she has produced a collection of small books, collectively titled Memoirs. New works in progress address the enterprise of imperialism, figured in the elegant fabrics called toiles de Jouy. Since 1997 she has curated a series of exhibitions at the Centre for Freudian Analysis and Research, which proposed a discussion on the position of the psychoanalyst and the place of work of art, the subject of a recent publication, edited by Marc du Ry and Sharon Kivland. Other curatorial projects include Anxious Words, at Waterstone's flagship bookshop in Piccadilly, London, in May 2000. She is Reader in Fine Art in the School of Cultural Studies, Sheffield Hallam University, and a Research Associate of the Centre for Freudian Analysis and Research, a Lacanian psychoanalytic training group.
