1965 M.A., Tulane University, New Orleans, Louisiana

Susan Hiller was born in the USA and has lived and worked in London since the early 1970's where she became well-known for her innovative and influential practice in a wide range of media, from drawing to video installation.
Her work can be seen as an excavation of overlooked, ignored, or rejected aspects of our shared cultural production, and her varied projects have been described as investigations into the 'unconscious' of culture.
Susan Hiller has had numerous solo exhibitions at national and international galleries including: Tate Gallery, Liverpool (1996); Foksal Gallery, Warsaw (1997); Institute of Contemporary Art, Philadelphia, Projektgalerie, Leipzig, Henie Onstad Kunstsenter, Oslo and Experimental Art Foundation, Adelaide (1998); Delfina Gallery, London and Tensta Konsthall, Stockholm (1999).
Her installation Witness, originally commissioned and presented by Artangel in 2000, was exhibited in 2001 in Intelligence at Tate Britain before travelling to the Habana Biennale in May 2002 and the Biennale of Sydney later the same year.
Group exhibitions include The Muse in the Museum, Museum of Modern Art, New York (1999) and Live in Your Head: Conceptual Art in Britain (1965- 75), Whitechapel Gallery, London.
Susan Hiller was awarded a Guggenheim Fellowship in 1998 and a DAAD Fellowship in Berlin for 2002-2003. In 2000, she accepted a 3-year appointment as BALTIC professor of Contemporary Art at the University of Newcastle.
