1950 Born in Gifu (JP)
Toshikatsu Endo studied at the Nagoya Junior College of Creative Art. Endo's artistic work stems from the realization of "a certain sense of absence, a feeling of something lacking" and the unattainable desire to fill this "lack" finds expression in the trail left by his work. Of course, this realization is not unconnected to that other keyword one often hears him use, "origin." One shape that appears frequently in his works is that of the circle and if this is considered the most basic, fundamental of shapes, then as an example of this, his "Lotus," could be regarded as representative of his work. The huge wooden circular form of "Lotus" is black and disfigured by fire with raw cracks appearing in the surface. Another ring of iron has been installed on the inside which contains water. The shape of the object makes the viewer observe that the black pool of water and nothingness enclosed by the double ring remain detached. They are fire and water. Again, as an outdoor exhibit, it can be said that the earth, air and sunshine have also been employed as raw materials in the exhibit. However, this artist, having been influenced by Minimal Art on the one hand, while struggling to show, through speculation and example, that Mono-ha movement is wrong on the other, deserves better than to have simple symbolism read into his work or be awarded easy praise as possessing an imagination of mythical scope. Having seen the lack in human existence and expressing a preference for the primitive, surely the object he will choose to lay before us will be the imaginative animal -- man -- his deeds and history. The works of Toshikatsu Endo draw the viewer to them through their shape, scale and textural energy. While offering an image and interpretation of such elemental forces as fire and water, his work also has the power to make us consider the imagination and vision that was required to give birth to such images.
