Angela Brennan, Everything that happens will happen today, 2010, oil on linen, 123 x 122.5cm
My latest work is about using abstraction as a kind of backdrop for still-life and vice versa. I choose subject matter from a personal archive of collected things, images and experiences that I'm drawn to in some way or another. I'm interested in re-configuring and re-scaling (usually up) the objects and placing them in made-up, fanciful, embellished settings and interiors, transforming them into versions of their former selves. In these paintings, I am aiming for a mezzo-mezzo approach where abstraction and figuration are present: patterning, scale, repetition, the use of luscious metallic pigments and oil paint are intended to reinforce this.
