"Bella Angora vs. Christian Falsnaes" is our attempt to treat the concepts of rivalry, powerplay, jealousy, competition and egoistic ambition. Not only in relation to art and the art world, where those concepts are constantly present as distinct set of social patterns, but furthermore in society as such and in particular contemporary culture.
The "battle", the competition and the determination to be "number one" has become the underlying foundation for a long range of activities all included by the term "culture". Casting-shows where youngsters are competing to become pop stars, hip hop style dance- and rap-battles, art-ranking and art-prizes, sport tournaments and computer-games are obvious examples.
The exhibition examines the mechanisms of rivalry in contemporary culture on the basis of rivalry within our own artistic collaboration. It is not a strict critique, but more a curious investigation.
We examine the influences that have shaped the way we perceive ourselves and our position in society as well as the art world and use these investigations as material for performative experiments that are presented as drawing, painting, installation and video. The room itself will be strictly divided between us as a stage for our battle.
Each of us will try to be number one.
Since we happen to represent opposite genders, the exhibition will inevitably show the concept of competition in relation to male and female norms.
Beside being a way for us to treat what we believe to be an interesting concept, "Bella Angora vs. Christian Falsnaes" is furthermore a way to develop and show our individual artistic activities within a mutual context.
