BLU WALLS AROUND
Texts by Anna Longo
From: 26-03-07 to: 19-05-07
Opening: 24-03-07 h. 6 p.m.
Getting rid of the graffiti artists' mark which implies the creation of writings on walls and having renounced the tag -an element of artistic identification- Bluis offering a vaster vision, rich of contemporary symbology which interweaves in a semantic dance of a very personal style.
His work stems historically from the birth of graffiti at the end of the 70's which arrived at its' peak, both in the eyes of the critic and of the market, in the 80's with artists like Haring and Basquiat. The brusque and hybrid character of the topics dealt along with the innovative connection between sign and architecture in the work of Blu suggest new poles of interest as far as Street Art and its' derivatives are concerned. Urban interventions play a fundamental role in his work, an expressive form that aims at random encounters that are fierce at times having a distended audience and transforming spaces which are usually characterised by the uniform grey of suburban cities. Renewed are on the other hand, style and expression which reflect a contemporary background where comics and cartoons become important elements of inspiration. Blu's work is not about making a loud statement about the creator himself, as it used to be the case with the 'writers', but instead it hasto do with a universe of images that when found in cities, countries or even continents apart denote a creative nomadic existence which is ever evolving.
This exhibition will be presented thus in a way that corresponds as much as possible to the poetics of the artist and the way he works. A selection of drawings on paper will be presented that come from the sketch book Blu uses in the concept phase during the creation of his works. As a matter of fact the artist gathers systematically on paper images of his creations which serve both as project sketches as much as evidence of his ephemeral mural paintings. In any case the intent will also be to exit the exhibition space in order to discover the interventions that the artist has made in Borgo Venezia, a place near the centre of Verona, verifying hence the true scope of a form of art that has to take place within the city, coming against the spaces and the people that traverse them.
Consequently in the gallery there will also be presented a documentation of the interventions created in the city: a map that testifies the artists' journey.
Blu has participated in numerous solo and group shows, in private and public spaces, both in Italy and abroad. |
