Carola Bark: The Gardner's Labyrinth
Opening: Saturday, 12.1.2008, 6-9 p.m.
Duration of the show: 12.1.-16.2. 2008
We are happy to present "The Gardener's Labyrinth", Carola Bark's second soloshow at the gallery. The Berlin based artist who has participated 2007 in the Goldrausch Postgraduate Professional Development Programme for Female Fine Artists, will show new works on paper, a walldrawing and fotos of her interventions in the public space.
Bark's drawing vocabulary is at first sight strictly non objective. Lines, grids, stripes, rhythmical explorations of surfaces and spaces. Almost anachronistically classical for a young emerging artist, who shows no interest whatsoever to give a cool or hip look to her works. In a very relaxed and confident manner she is adapting a simple formal language based on linear elements, a vocabulary, deeply rooted in the discourse of non-objective art and connected to artists like Agnes Martin or Fred Sandback.
Her most recent drawings are quoting the geometric structures of italian Renaissance gardens creating repetitive patterns, more reminiscent of a circuit diagram than of the caring gardener's hand.
Her interventions in the public space and in the natural environmemt , spontaneously executed drawings with masking tape, could be described as "minimal art graffiti". Bark is herewith reflecting on urban sites and architectural contexts and - with a certain sense of humor, is also creating moments of irritation by shifting the viewers perspective, given the significance or total irrelevance of the location choosen. |
