"All the natural movements of the soul are controlled by laws analogous to those of physical gravity. Grace is the only exception. Grace fills empty spaces, but it can only enter where there is a void to receive it, and it is grace itself which makes this void. The imagination is continually at work filling up all the fissures through which grace might pass."1
The exhibition Albedo by Cecília Costa presents new photography work, developing certain concerns of previous moments of her work, such as the exploration of symmetries, gravity and equilibrium, to which is added a research on the suggestion of modeling by light.
Being our physical condition one of tridimensionality oriented by the tension of the opposites (intended to be complementary) right/ left, up/ down, front/ back and their resulting tension of inside/ outside, it is the alternance between the suggestions of weight and its suspension, of advance and retreat, and the referred (a)symmetry, that subvertthe expectancy of correspondence with reality that stems from the photographic support.
The images present either unfinished or passing situations, in transit to another thing, sometimes a simulacrum, defined for their contingent condition, rather than the promise of a moment of full realization. Both in images of construction sites as well as in the organic/ natural guise of clouds, that seem to develop vertically downwards as stalactites, one finds cases of in developing matters, that experience different shapes yet without (possibly never) settling in a definite outline. These possibilities, passages, unfoldings, as one of the stages of the alchemy work that, having already lend its name to the measuring coefficient of light reflecting from matter, also lends the title for the exhibition. And matter is intended to be invaded by light.
After Máquina de Chilrear (2011), Carvão (2009) and Pli (2005), Albedo is Cecília Costa's forth exhibition at Baginski, Galeria/ Projectos.

The starting point for her work is usually the human figure, questioning the concepts of perception, identity and auto-representation.
In 2004 was selected by curator Isabel Carlos for the Sidney Biennial.
Her work is represented in several public and private Collections, including the collections of the PLMJ Foundation, the BESArt Collection, at the Ilídio Pinho Collection and the Isabel and Julião Sarmento Collection.
