A NEW PERSPECTIVE ON "URBAN RENEWAL" AT 101/EXHIBIT
DURING ART BASEL WEEK
Gallery's Exterior to Become a Canvas
For Brazilian Street Artist Claudio Ethos
MIAMI - October 28, 2009 - High concept art transitions from a traditional stretch canvas to a very non-traditional stucco wall when Claudio Ethos, Brazilian wunderkind of the evolved urban street art movement, installs an astonishing, multi-dimensional illustration on the exterior wall of 101/exhibit between December 1 and December 6. Inside the gallery, an Ethos exhibition featuring new works will run from December 3 to January 20, 2010.
Raised in the poverty-stricken neighborhoods of his native Sao Paolo, Brazil, Ethos became deeply influenced by the calligraphic atmosphere and graffiti art on the streets around him. He decided he, too, would become a "graffiteiro," or urban painter. But he quickly saw more potential in the art form than merely "tagging" every non-moving flat surface obtainable, and as a result, has emerged as a visionary in the street art movement, creating characters who emote struggle, hopelessness and anxiety, rather than characters that distort typography.
In a recent Juxtapoz Magazine article, Ethos' work was described as being "formulated within a mind that rarely rests, (his) surrealistic creatures exist in a perpetual state of struggle as they have travelled from the artist's subconscious to the waking world of the general public. The excessive and meticulous detail that is the hallmark of Ethos' work is sure to transport the viewer to an examination of one's own waking dream."
After studying visual arts at Londrinna State University in Brazil, Ethos unveiled his first solo show, "Transition," in April 2008 at the Studio Cromie Gallery in Puglia, Italy. In August of that year, he was invited to the Fame Festival in Italy to work alongside other international urban art masters, including Martis from England, and Blu and Enicail Cane from Italy. Last December, Ethos was invited to exhibit "Insomnia" at 111 Minna Gallery in San Francisco. In March, he held another solo exhibition at the Christopher Henry Gallery in New York City.
Ethos' exhibition at 101/exhibit is the first time the artist will be showcased in South Florida. 101/exhibit is a unique space dedicated to showcasing provocative art and, as such, will provide an ideal backdrop for Ethos and his work. By pushing boundaries and dissecting the predictable, the gallery is quickly gathering a strong following of fine art tastemakers and trailblazers. Owned and operated by Jerome Shaw, Sloan Schaffer and Adam Wolfson, 101/exhibit strives to provide a dynamic gathering place unrestricted by era, locale, or convention. 101/exhibit is located at 101 NE 40th Street, in the heart of Miami's Design District.
