contemporary art ruhr (C.A.R.) - the innovative art fair at the European Capital of Culture RUHR.2010
More participants, a unique location and an innovative concept: As part of the European Capital of Culture RUHR.2010, the contemporary art ruhr (C.A.R.) art fair will present a unique mix of avant-garde and established artists from Germany, France, the Netherlands, Austria, Hungary, the USA and South Korea. From October 29-31, 57 galleries for contemporary art, several special exhibitions, academies, art associations and selects artists will transform the World Cultural Heritage Site Zollverein in Essen into a pulsating hub of contemporary art.

What's innovative about C.A.R.? C.A.R. revolutionizes the art world with a unique concept: Fair - offering all participants the same opportunity to showcase their works. Minimalist - with an open and puristic appearance. Pulsating - with ever-new insights into contemporary art trends. By offering low fees for exhibitors and a contemporary exhibition concept, newcomers, avant-garde and established artists can all showcase their works at C.A.R. Both experienced and newer art collectors will be able to find pieces of interest - and discover something new at C.A.R.

The art fair wants to establish a strong regional art market for the Ruhr and its more than 5.3 million residents.

The programme
International and local galleries as well as select artists will showcase their works on 5,000 square metres of exhibition space in the breathtaking spaces offered by the World Cultural Heritage Site Zollverein. Formerly the world's largest coal mine, Zollverein is also known as the world's "most beautiful coal mine". Designed in New Sobriety style, it is regarded as one of the most impressive monuments of the industrial age and now a centre of the Ruhr metropolis's creative industry.

It's the third time that C.A.R. participants will showcase contemporary art in halls A 5, A 6 and A 12 as well as on two levels of the award-winning SANAA building. The futuristic cube was designed by the SANAA Japanese architectural firm (Kazuyo Sejima and Ruye Nishiziwa), the 2010 Pritzker Prize winners.

For the first time ever, for all visitors of the opening the C.A.R.-Sky-Lounge will take place in the beautifully designed Ernst-Brost-Pavillon on Friday, October 29. Located on the roof of the former coal washing plant on top of the Ruhrmuseum, the site offers a spectacular panoramic view of the Ruhr metropolis. The number of galleries taking part in C.A.R. has doubled compared to last year.

About C.A.R.
C.A.R. consists of two annual events that have been taking place in several halls at Essen's Zollverein World Cultural Heritage Site since 2006: the media art fair in summer and the fair for contemporary art in autumn. To date more than 800 artists have taken part in C.A.R. at the Zollverein World Cultural Heritage Site. The number of participating galleries has doubled in 2010 compared to last year. With both events in seven spaces, C.A.R. will present itself as an increasingly international art fair.

C.A.R. is designed as a fair for discoverers that presents new perspectives in a communicative atmosphere: With an open exhibition space without the usual fair booths, art and communication will be the focus; communication barriers between participants and visitors are disappearing. Special exhibitions, events, symposia, the C.A.R. Gallery, and an open competition for photography and digital art will take place in conjunction with the fair. contemporary art ruhr is the only art fair that takes place twice a year - in summer and fall - at the same location. It also organizes Germany's only fair for media art and is the only fair for contemporary art to take place at a World Cultural Heritage Site.

C.A.R. 2010 is a cooperation project and official part of the programme of the European Capital of Culture RUHR.2010. It is organized by galerie/agentur 162. Cooperation partners are Stiftung Zollverein and the Office of Culture of the city of Essen. C.A.R. 2010 is also a part of Grand Tour 2010, which presents select travel packages to some of the cultural highlights in the Ruhr and nearby Rhine areas. This project has been supported over years by many partners in business and the media.
