Daniel Verbis, Escuela de amor submarino, 2008, acrylic on paper mounted in box of acrylic glass, 70 x 100 cm
UNDER WATER LOVE SCHOOL - a rough translation into English of ESCUELA DE AMOR SUBMARINO would sound like this.
As the title suggests the Spanish artist Daniel Verbis is occupied with language - not only visual language, but also poetical terms, linguistic signs, phonetic sounds. In short all the many possible ways to express and perceive the world.
In his abstract, organic works he extends the concept of painting by exploring diverse material, procedure and form. Yet, to call him a painter would be inaccurate.
The media is strongly mixed and involves everything from acrylic and plastic to sewing thread, wood and iron. There are no canvases mounted on stretchers. Still his works very often end up taking form as pictorial constructions in 2 dimensions meant to hang on a wall.
Accordingly the beholder's approach to these constructions is placed within a framework associated with the discipline of painting. However, he or she will soon discover that usual borders are being transgressed and the field of painting widely expanded. What remains is a hybrid work bringing together different genres.
Sometimes Verbis works on site directly onto the wall. In Galerie AsbŠk he presents two large mural paintings that become part of the architecture.
But in fact his experimental approach to art does not stop with painting. Included in the exhibition are also sculptures in polyester and marble dust as well as works on paper, mounted in acrylic glass boxes, where the choice of media determines the result because Verbis often uses different types of paper with various pattern and structure.
Daniel Verbis (b. 1968) is an important figure in young Spanish art. The show in Copenhagen is his first in Scandinavia, but he has done several shows abroad. In 2006 he presented a major solo show at the Spanish contemporary art museum MUSAC in LÚon. He is also represented in the permanent collection of the national art museum Reina Sofia in Madrid.
