The Flipbook Show
A flipbook is a book that turns into a movie for a short while, a series of pictures whose narrative unfolds as you look at it, an object that has to be touched in order to reveal its story. Being pocket mini-cinema, as well as a sequential narrative, the flipbook is an object provoking artistic interpretations and providing exciting insights into the nature of animated picture. The show is intended to draw attention to flipbooks within the discursive framework surrounding the relationship between film and the fine arts. Although familiar and omnipresent, the flipbook is a medium that has remained relatively unexamined up until now. Kunsthalle Düsseldorf will start an exciting dialogue that will not only include the notion of the flipbook as a popular medium throughout the history of visual media, but will also draw upon early photography, the pre-history of film, and the flipbook as avant-garde film. The show will focus on the history of flipbooks as well as on flipbooks by contemporary artists and filmmakers.
