New York, NY (July 31, 2013) Hionas Gallery is pleased to announce that for the opening of its fall 2013 season it will present Schwarzwälde, from British-born artist David Rhodes. This is the artist's first solo show in New York City, which will run from September 8 to October 13, 2013.
For Schwarzwälde Rhodes introduces a collection of new, untitled paintings on raw rectangular canvas in which he composes exacting strips, zips, bands, and triangles with the use of tape and carbon black acrylic. These forms, while meticulously placed, perform the fascinating feat of rarely intersecting and simultaneously never truly opposing one another.
Each pictorial space Rhodes creates shows a series of relationships at work. And whether the eye navigates each space with ease or haste, these relationships of line, form, and shade often appear more converse than symbiotic, like two people alone in the same room. "I find that working with such limitations can be productive," says Rhodes, "...for making a pictorial space wherein the individual components all interact." Indeed, Rhodes' abstractions reveal just how lovely austerity can be.
The seeming simplicity of Rhodes' paintings also lends them an unmistakable architectural quality. His carefully placed lines and chevrons, and the varying degrees of thickness he applies to each, comprise structures of mutually supportive elements that could not stand without one another. Simply examine the column of a Le Corbusier structure or the precision of a late-1950s Frank Stella painting and the genesis of Rhodes' compositions will become clear. Additi onally, the rhythmic spacing of lines and the deliberate changes in direction deftly executed by Rhodes recall the work of Brazilian artists Lygia Pape and Helio Oitichica. Each band and strip, each soft or hard edge, is a piece of something grander. And yet with little more to work with than the simplest of www.hionasgallery.com Page 2 of 2 geometric forms, viewers will take away, according to the artist, "a perceived reality that retains openness rather than communicates a specific meaning."
The opening reception for Schwarzwälde will take place on Sunday evening, September 8, from 6:00 to 8:00 PM. The artist will be present.

He has exhibited extensively throughout Europe and the U.S., with solo exhibitions at Some Walls, Oakland, CA; Galerie Katharina Krohn, Basel; Centrum Berlin, Berlin; Josetti Hof, Berlin; Palacete Viscondes, Oporto, Portugal, and Habitat, Kings Road, London, among others; as well as dozens of group exhibitions worldwide, most notably with Lion and Lamb, London; JiM Contemporani, Bercelona; Kunsthaus, Tosterglope, Germany; ParisCONCRET, Paris; Mass MOCA, North Adams, MA; Janet Kurnatowsky Gallery, New York; and Pierogi, Brooklyn, to name just a few. Rhodes is also a prolific writer and art critic, having written reviews for such publications as Artforum, The Brooklyn Rail, and ArtCritical, as well catalog texts about the work of Ernst Wilhelm Nay for Michael Werner Gallery and Mary Boone Gallery, New York; Na than Peter for PSM Galerie, Berlin; Henri Matisse for Museum Ludwig, Cologne; and Mary Heilmann for Museum Ludwig, Cologne. Schwarzwälde (September 8 - October 5, 2013) is David Rhodes' first solo exhibition in New York City. He lives and works in Berlin and New York City.
