VWFA Art Project: Eko Nugroho "In Wonderland"
September 29th - October 20th, 2007
You are cordially invited to the opening on Saturday, 29 September 2007, at 8pm.
The artist will give a talk at 7pm.
VWFA Project Room is happy to announce the second installment of the Art Project Programme with Eko Nugroho "In Wonderland", an unconventional fairy tale of a magical kingdom narrated through drawings, mural, video and a series of 3-dimensional objects.
In addition, the project will also feature, "The Invasion of Me", a series of 10 sculpture/action figures based on one of the recurring characters in the artist's drawings. Made especially for and in Kuala Lumpur, the artist will be inviting 10 different individuals or groups of people --from artists to designers to people from different walks of life-- to "collaborate" with the artist by responding to the sculptures/action figures through personal unique styles and character. Jalaini Abu Hassan, Ise, the MFX 3-d animation team and landscape architects Ng Sek San & Carolyn Lau and family are among some of the individuals and groups featured in this project. The result of their responses and interventions will be on display in the Project Room as part of the show.
Eko Nugroho (b. 1977) is one of the most exciting young stars in contemporary Indonesian art. Since his first solo "Bercerobong" at Cemeti Art House in 2002, the artist's career has spanned a large number of exhibitions locally as well as abroad, namely in Southeast Asia, Australia, Japan and Europe. Among some of the noted international shows he has participated in recently include the 5th Asia-Pacific Triennial of Contemporary Art at Queensland Art Gallery, Australia (2006); "Dirty Yoga", Taipei Biennale in Taiwan (2006) and recently "Wind From the East" at Kiasma Museum of Contemporary Art in Helsinki, Finland.
Nugroho's comic inspired work is "a storytelling journey" with different audience at different sites. He works across disciplines, from murals and paintings to drawings, book projects, animation and most recently with large-scale embroideries. "The idea to make embroideries began from the badges on uniforms of soldiers, police, boy scouts and so on; I thought, 'why not make them larger'? After all, embroidery is a form of sewing, and sewing is a way of drawing, where lines 'drawn' through thread and needle", the artist says.
Often working with thick dark outlines, Nugroho's graphic technique and imagery reflect Indonesia's media-rich and politically charged environment. HIs part man-part machine characters are often accompanied by bizzare, ironic and oftentimes provocative statements in thought balloons or speech bubbles saying, for instance, "please shoot me from the back."
Nugroho is also the founder of the popular "Daging Tumbuh", an independent comic published bi-annually since 2000 with of a loose collective of friendly collaborators.
