Virginia Commonwealth University in Qatar presents Time and Memory

Doha, Qatar The Gallery at Virginia Commonwealth University in Qatar presents the Faculty Focus Exhibition featuring Emilie Burnham, Don Crow, Brian Geary, Narita Mattock, Muneera U. Spence. The exhibition will open with a reception on, 26 November 2008, at 7:30 pm. The event is open to the public and no reservations are required.

In the Spring of 2008 The Gallery at Virginia Commonwealth University in Qatar invited teaching faculty in the three design departments and Design Foundation to submit proposals for a Faculty Focus exhibition based on the general theme of Time and Memory. The works are co-juried by a member of the Gallery Committee and two invited consultative jurors from the region, the graphic designer Ian Silverstein and the director of Dubai's B21 Gallery, Isabelle van den Eynde.

The chosen proposals comprise works by the artists and designers Emilie Burnham (Graphic Design), Don Crow (Design Foundation), Brian Geary (Design Foundation), Narita Mattock (Fashion Design) and Muneera Spence (Graphic Design).

Each faculty member has interpreted the theme of Time and Memory in their own personal way and explored its relevance to their work in general. Since there was no limitation in the original call on the media proposed, or the space needed, the exhibition comprises a variety of works including prints, photographic collages, oil paintings, fashion garments and an interactive installation. The latter, a work by Muneera Spence, looks beyond the Gallery space and opens up links to the outside world involving participation by the public.

The aim of VCUQatar's Faculty Focus exhibitions is to give faculty members an opportunity to present the results of current artistic and design research and exploration in a select, juried exhibition.

The exhibition is scheduled from 26 November 2008 - 24 January 2009. The Gallery is open Sundays–Thursdays, 10:00 am–4:00 pm, or by prior appointment. A Reception will take place on Wednesday, 26 November 2008 at 7:30 pm at The Gallery | VCUQatar.
