THAT OBSCURE OBJECT OF DESIRE
By Raśl Zamudio Taylor
That Obscure Object of Desire takes its title from the famous film by the director Luis Bunuel. The exhibition uses desire as explored in Bunuel's film where an older man's romantic interests towards a younger woman become obsessive and never fulfilled. All of this occurs within the backdrop of armed, political insurgency. As such, the exhibition takes as its point of narrative departure the convergence of sexual and political frustration into different yet related contemporary contexts where personal fulfillment is never attained through, for example, consumerism, social status, political affiliation, and adherence to authority, to name just a few. The obscure object of desire in the exhibition, then, is about those things that we pursue to try to rectify the human condition which ultimately is in perpetual state of lack. Facelifts, as well as religion, such things as can never be attained by consumerism, is never attained!
