The visible is an inexhaustible field in which the eye acts as navigator. It is structured as a surprise space for the viewing eye. I look towards the horizon: beforehand no leopard was there to be seen, then all of a sudden a leopard is there. Since I am organised in such a way that the presence of a leopard cannot be a matter of indifference to me, its appearance on the horizon triggers a moment of existential stress within me. Stress means that something previously invisible develops into a present moment that involves an element of danger, with the energetically excited eye supplying the material for an emergency judgement. The image arises when the leopard leaps into eternity.

The modern world is based upon the facts of research. Research means combining techniques in an effort to do away with what is concealed. That entails nothing other than hauling things which previously lay in darkness up to an illuminated surface. For several centuries now artists have entered into a conspiracy with scientists and historians in an attempt to lead the large-scale assault upon concealment further towards its goal.
