VCUQatar presents the exhibition Henry Moore: Prints from the Collection of the British Council, London. This exhibition runs from February 5 -March 8, 2008. A reception will be held on Wednesday, February 5, 2008 at 7:30 pm and Gallery Talks, February 6-7, 2008 at 1:30 pm.
Between 1931 and 1984 the British sculptor Henry Moore produced 719 different graphic works, with the great majority of over 600 created after 1969. The pressures of old age, which made work on sculpture physically exhausting and an international demand for print-work by the artist, led Moore to this outburst of creativity in print making so late in life. The 25 works in this exhibition have been selected from the gift of over 200 prints that Moore presented to the British Council in 1984 to mark its 50th anniversary. The works shown comprise several series inspired by literary works, landscapes inspired by his home Hoglands, north of London, but also informed by his creativity as a sculptor working in bronze. In addition several sculpture maquettes are shown to illustrate Moore's work as a sculptor. Curated by the British Council in London, the exhibition has been previously shown in Kazakhstan, Bangladesh and France. It has been reviewed in the British press and abroad for its innovation in presenting a side of Moore's artistic oeuvre rarely seen in exhibition.
"Our cooperation with the British Council and their generosity in letting VCUQ Gallery show works from their collection marks an important step in the external relationships of VCUQatar. It is the first time to my knowledge that the works of the British sculptor Henry Moore are exhibited at a public gallery in the Gulf region. It is hoped that this exhibition will be a forum for both students and the public to engage in a larger enquiry about art." noted Dr Jochen Sokoly VCUQatar Gallery Director and Assistant Professor in Art History.
The exhibition is scheduled from February 5 - March 8, 2008. The VCUQatar Gallery is open Sundays-Thursdays, 10:00 am-5:00 pm, or by prior appointment.
