PRESS RELEASE
In Present Tense
Young Greek artists
The National Museum of Contemporary Art is presenting the exhibition In Present Tense, Young Greek Artists from December 13th, 2007 until March 30th, 2008, in the exhibition space of the new wing of The Athens Concert Hall.
The exhibition had from the very beginning a research-based character. Through an open invitation a very rich material of 500 portfolios was assembled from Greek artists born after 1965. A systematic and thorough research of this material followed, which lasted approximately two years, through which 34 artists who are active in Greece and large international artistic centers such as London, Berlin, Paris, Amsterdam and elsewhere, were selected.
The main aim of the exhibition where 110 works are presented, 50 of which are new artistic productions especially for the present exhibition, is to showcase a new artistic dynamic which is evident in the last decade. The exhibition is an exploration of essential tendencies and proposals of contemporary Greek artistic creation, showcasing the pluralism of practices and directions. Aim is to detect the problematics and the critical stance of Greek artists towards contemporary issues, such as mass culture and its mediums, the social role of architecture, the redefinition of personal and collective identity, the re-examination of history and the history of art, searching for the dialogue they create with the rest of the world. How is their work placed in relation to new communication possibilities and realities? What is their critical stance towards architecture and its social and political dimensions? How do they redefine their relationship with history and the history of art?
The structure of the exhibition follows an open presentation which allows multiple directions and readings, bringing together different media, such as photography, painting, video, installations, sculpture. Aiming to develop a dialogue between works, the exhibition showcases new possibilities and configured directions, personal styles and collective trends.
