What is fashion in a modern society? This show intends, through point of views of contemporary artists, to give some light on fashion as something equivalent to desire, and to reveal the duality of the desire in fashion. This is to grasp more deeply the dark side of distorted culture of consumption resulted from the extreme polarization of the gap between haves and have-nots, and to ask a question whether a reasonable dissolution of desire is in nature possible or not.
Ju HyoJin, who is in full activity as a conceptual artist, has been absorbed in a theme, namely, human desire for fashion, especially for shoes since her first solo exhibition in New York(Gallery Annex) in 2002.
In works such as ‘shoes desirable but unwearable’ we could easily see what is it that she wants to talk about. In this exhibition the artist attempts to disclose the duality of desire, and to twist, lightly, the distorted mode of fulfilling desire in modern society. With this ‘light twist’ she wants to make the public to think over the problem she brought up without pressing upon their mind.
In a room set as a psychological space with pink color, shopping bags wiil be displayed as important signifiens of desire. An installation work for visitors to take part is being planned. |
