Jukka Rusanen: Pose, 2014, oil on canvas, 216 x 185 cm.
Helsinki Contemporary has the pleasure to invite you to the opening of artist Jukka Rusanen s exhibition Stage Thursday May 8th at 5-7 pm.
"The human continuously stages his environment, the changes of his mind. The paintings are stagelike and scenic - and the gallery is a stage like any other space", says Jukka Rusanen.
Rusanen s recent work has revolved around finding his own voice in painting, approaching the source of his original state of mind. In the new works - paintings, installations and colour palette - the space left to intuition and the artist s endeavor not to foresee too much is visible.
In his working process, Rusanen uses references that are often images of works from art history. He might have several art books open at the same time while he is painting. In his earlier production these pictorial starting points were frequently recognizable, with sources ranging from Fragonard s The Swing to more homely works like Sallinen s The Washerwomen.
In the new paintings often all that is left of the reference source is the colour, the graphic quality, or a shape alluding to a particular style or period. In some cases the artwork referred to may have been changed halfway through the process, creating a surprising tension in the painting. The new materials and point of views also tell about the reform of the artist - of a new kind of gaze.
At the opening a performance artist, costumes and music meet on the stage.
