MODERN ARTISTS GALLERY PRESENTS THIS IS WHAT HAPPENS, A UNIQUE COLLABORATION BETWEEN ARTISTS KATE KESSLING AND PAUL KESSLING

Modern Artists Gallery is proud to present a new collaboration between artists' Kate Kessling and Paul Kessling, who have created a unique series of sculptures that combine colour with code. Inspired by the Pythagorean numbering system, in which arrays of dots were used to calculate complex mathematical theorems, Kessling and Kessling have devised a system whereby the subject is broken down into colour codes, using individually handmade, coloured resin pegs placed in concrete. Each piece represents a coded, colour interpretation of the subject and at once the relationship between the artist and viewer becomes ever more intimate as the artist as code maker calls on the viewer to become code breaker.

With each peg being interchangeable, each sculpture presents a vast number of different combinations and colour harmonies. In 'Dot Matrix 77/1 All Is A Number' [pictured] for example, "if you made one change every second, it would take you 50000000000000000000000 times the current age of the universe to run through all the different variables" (Maths: Alex Bryson).

The show will also feature conceptual 'momentary assemblages' by Kate Kessling, a series of photographic images, collage and prints, that present everyday objects in repetition. Taking some of the least considered objects of our everyday lives, Kate Kessling creates serial rhythms of colour and form, inviting the viewer to re-assess their function and meaning. "With the 'momentary assemblages' or 'not quite objects', I enjoy the seductive aesthetic of the patterns, but I'm more concerned with similarities and differences as the objects interact. I am questioning how we look and see, the rhythm that objects create in repeat, and I'm amazed at how finely tuned our sense of pattern and ability to see repeat pattern is, and yet we can miss the larger more obvious differences." (Kate Kessling)

THIS IS WHAT HAPPENS opens at Modern Artists Gallery on Saturday 4th May 2013 and runs until Saturday 28th May 2013.
