LARS ARRHENIUS & JOHANNES MÜNTZING
"The Big Store"
November 8 - December 3 2008
Specta is happy to present the animation The Big Store by Lars Arrhenius & Johannes Müntzing. The film is a humorous yet harsh portrait of trivial and unconsious large-scale consumption.
The animation The Big Store is set in the luxury departmentstore NK in Stockholm, which was the actual scene of the murder of Swedish minister of foreign affairs Anna Lindh on September 10th 2003. The murder took place during the last days of the Swedish campaign for the referendum concerning the introduction of the Euro in Sweden. Arrhenius/Müntzing have set their focus on the minutes before the murder, as any other day at the store: we meet children playing computer games, a shoplifter, society people kissing cheeks etc. In x-ray images the store is presented as a passifying micro-cosmos where transparent skeletons wander around restlessly surrounded by empty shelves. In other words, the film gives us an impression of a kind of triumph for emptiness and a hollow desire for more.
The Big Store was on show at the Gothenberg International Filmfestival 2008, where it was among eight nominated films in the short film category. The film will also be shown at the leading documentary-festival IDFA in Amsterdam in November. The Big Store is supported by SVT Dokumentär, Filminstituttet, Film i Skåne and YLE.
Lars Arrhenius and Johannes Müntzing have collaborated before on films about us as human beings and how we live, consume, die. In the world of Arrhenius, the everyday drama of ordinary people is the focus, and the universal character of these dramas is pointed out through anonymous images.
