As summer comes when spring goes, or rain becomes snow when winter comes, the nature, home of our mind, is constant. Unlike human who looks after his/her own interests in relationships, the nature tolerates us unconditionally like our mothers do. The nature sometimes resembles the tenor of our lives. Perhaps for that reason artists have tried to paint images of the grandest and the most beautiful nature on their canvases.
Lee Gim-Cheon’s favorite motives are including forest, bird, grass, man, dog, and the likes. For example, in his recent work Danyangpalkyung(????) we find man and dog naturally in harmony. Indeed, his works show a kind of philosophy of life, which we can measure from what he said: the older you get, the humbler you become in confronting, of all things, a grand natural view.
In recent years Lee Gim-Cheon’s works has undergone a change in trying to beat a path between the novelty and the tradition. His constant effort at the cost of immense patience and time permeated his works. His canvas, on which we can find traces of not some careless but numerous painstaking strokes, contains a strong sense of space. Whenever we see his paintings, we can recognize the sweat and the passion he poured into. As an artist who uses ink and watercolors in traditional manner, he is given a knotty problem to succeed traditional method without being stagnant.
The current exhibition will show how simple and carefree the artist’s outlook on life is, and how wonderful it harmonizes with the scent of the nature he painted. Like a sword dancer cutting through the air with sword, Lee Gim-Cheon is dancing on a sheet of Hanji with his brush. |
