"About Live Originality Exhibition"


The exhibition "Live Originality" invited five Berlin-based artists who are doing visual art internationally. The technical aspects of this exhibition are painting, photography, sculpting and installation. The artists already enjoy remarkable international attention on the worldwide art market of the 21 st century. We hope that through this exhibition a small piece of history will be written that is intertwined with west European avant-gardist art and in exchange with eastern currents.

Sharing the theoretical basis with modern art the definition of beauty within the context of the postmodern is based on the destruction of previous kinds of beauty as such. The postmodern begins with a critique and negation of the modern. It propagates the parting from modernism or its overcoming. Content-wise it criticizes a capitalist system that is concentrated around white male. It arouse interest about the peripherized Other. In other words, spheres that have not been subject of modern art, as for example race, homosexuality, women, class etc. are object and theme, content of contemporary art.

It follows that contemporary art is hard to understand for people who are captured within a rigid frame of the definition of beauty and accordingly limited thinking. Contemporary art on the one hand is very conceptualized and on the other hand an overlapping of various genres. Through the joining of always newly developed techniques the field of contemporary art is being extended continually. That is why it is characterized by complexity and diversity. In this way contemporary art causes incomprehensibility and rejection with many. Also discourses that deal with contemporary art are characterized by according pluralistic theory.

Germany is one of the places that have influenced world history of contemporary art, which derived from this postmodernism. Beginning with Nam June Paik and Joseph Beuys to Anselm Kiefer there have been many artists whose spirit has met especially great attention in unified Berlin, because they signify the modi of the afterwards of the postmodern and the destruction of the original, but especially because they are not trapped within their thinking, but developed themselves freely.

What usually does mean original? The expression says, means authenticity, essentiality as it is. However, within arts there is called into question a lot of things as for example originality, and even the definition of art itself is being put into question. Especially postmodernism, from which contemporary art derives, propagates the destruction and deconstruction of originality.

The artists put together in a new way the relationship between creator, work and spectators sometimes the uniqueness and aura or the ideal order, the noblesse, the beauty of the modernism artworks, the myth of their originality is being dismantled by borrowing and parody, sometimes by adopting of different media and inter-media combinations.

However this kind of works creating meaninglessness of the original are now being discarded as a kind of mythical avant-garde art, and contemporary art suffers from this, so that piece by piece it is being replaced by trivial precursors.

Creation no longer is the restage-performance of manual techniques, but mental action ? that is the concept of a revolutionary metamorphosis and the according avant-garde modalities are more or less successful in deconstructing and destroying "modern originality" of artworks. However, in contemporary art, which understands mental action as basic element of creating artists, the "originality" lives with the artist.

That is, it does not involve rigid, stiffen "modern originality" but "live originality", which is continually passing and active, alive and energetic. The originality that was object of destruction was destroyed by avant-garde modalities and conceptual art, but the contemporary artists of the 21 st century can now also develop themselves freely, and by that they develop their own originality and create contemporary art of the current passing present and of the future.
