Marija Strazdaitė, From series Untitled, 2013
Gel pen, paper
65 x 50 cm
This Thursday, May 30, 6 pm, the Review Room will introduce the series of drawings Untitled , 2013 by the sculptor Marija Strazdaitė (born in 1991). This is the second review of Marija’s works in the Gallery – her installation Year 2000 (2000 m., 2013) was set up in the Review Room in the last week of February this year. Marija needs her abstract and meditative drawings as the preparation phase for her installations. However, those are not mere sketches, but rather an attempt to enter the state where intuition and coincidence give birth to new ideas. Drawn with a grey and white glossy gel pen, the works are quite mechanical: Marija comes up with the initial structure – lines along and across the page, a dense spiral, big or fine dots – and then mechanically fills in the entire page. However the patterns are occasionally disrupted by accidents, when the wrist presses the pen for a moment, or the pen releases an aggregate of gel, which creates structures of darker and lighter dots. Technically, two of the drawings are not even drawings, but aluminium plates traversed with straight scotches. In essence, both her installations and drawings are techniques to capture light for a moment, and the aluminium slabs are just another way of doing it.
