Thursday, 8 November 2012, 7 p.m.
Dr. Andreas Schalhorn, Curator Kupferstichkabinett, Staatliche Museen zu Berlin
The exhibition "Across the Fourth Dimension" at kunstgaleriebonn is showing works the painter Max Cole, born in Kansas in 1937, has been making since 2010.
Thursday, 19 December, 2012, 7 p.m.
The artist lives and works in Somerset, California. Since 1963, she has become well known through international group and solo exhibitions at museums (such as the Albright-Knox Museum, Buffalo, New York and Kolumba, Museum of the Cologne Archdiocese) as well as through galleries. Most recently, in the summer of 2012, her art was shown in Germany at the Mies van der Rohe Haus in Berlin. She is represented with works in a great number of museums and private collections (such as MOMA, New York and the Kupferstichkabinett of the Staatliche Museen zu Berlin).
Since the beginning of the 1960s, Max Cole has been systematically developing her work. Despite the superficial resemblance to Minimal Art, she does not view her image system of horizontal and vertical placements as a distancing from reality. Her works always bear immanent reference to nature, to reality between the horizons.
Making increasing reductions in her continuous search for the essential, she arrived at such an image solution early on. Via stripes, the picture surface is transformed into endless space: in countless, vertical strokes drawn freehand, she writes herself into the image in an intensely, meditative working process.
An artist book with 20 drawings is being published for the occasion by Weidle Verlag, Bonn.
Tuesdays to Fridays, 2 - 6 p.m.; Thursdays 2 - 10 p.m.
Saturdays, 11 a.m. - 3 p.m. and by appointment
