This project is a touring exhibition that will highlight the work of eight Vancouver emerging artists. There will be a two-dimensional focus of painting, video and photography. One aim of this project is to draw attention to the blurring of boundaries between art production and its genres, and to a smaller extent, contemporary critical writing and curatorship.
This is a small selection of artists, most of whom have emerged out of art schools ( the University of British Columbia and Emily Kerr Institute of Art and Design especially ) in the wake of the international attention fostered by the work of Vancouver post-conceptual photographers such as Jeff Wall or Stan Douglas. Some of the artists were students of these predecessors, others not. Despite the great expectations and heavily theoretical climate of the Vancouver institutions around contemporary art, there are several streams of new art production that are bold, fresh and while conscious of what work came before them, they do not repeat styles or strategies of 1980s to 1990s Vancouver photography. This group of artists will represent a small section of these newer tendencies in contemporary art from Vancouver.
