Press Release 'Notting Hill 2050 Exhibition'

The founders of SaLon Gallery in Notting Hill presented a theme 'Eco-Terrorism' at an international conference for international conflict held three years ago at St Catherine's College, Oxford University organised by the Ministry of Defense which attracted all the major experts on the international conflict theme.

Three years on, the same individuals are co-organising an audio/visual exhibition 'Notting Hill 2050' with the aim to visually show what Notting Hill would look like in 2050 if temperature continues rising.

SaLon Gallery is one of the only commercial galleries in the world that has moved in that direction and has been planning to do so since its launch in December 2005.

What differentiates the gallery from others in the area and across London is the fact that it represents a fusion between art, culture, technology, ecology and entertainment presented in a very homely ambiance where food and drink are also a part of art.

Its relaxing atmosphere offers something extra and challenges the perception various audiences might have on art galleries as a whole (defined as sterile and offered to a selected few) by promoting contemporary and modern art to a wider audience in an unconventional way (it operates as a coffee shop during the day, presentation room, fridge-style theatre, private cinema, live music venue, entertainment venue with facilities for DJs and more).e gallery's main aim is to engage its audience to feel comfortable around art without a necessity to fully understand it but more to appreciate it. It challenges the society as a whole and introduces art in a much more relaxing and approachable way unlike any other gallery in London.

The exhibition's main aim is of an educational nature featuring graphic and artistic representations of Notting Hill in 2050 using art as a tool to better understand and jointly learn how to make the necessary changes regarding our relationship with the nature.

SaLon Gallery is in a process of looking into converting its premises on Westbourne Grove into a 100% eco-friendly environment as well as engage in a number local, national and international projects related to global warming and ecology. Furthermore, the founders of the concept are looking into facilities to create an eco-village in Hungary and Croatia which will act as a model to be replicated in many other parts of the world in an attempt to raise awareness on the importance of eco-friendly developments.

The actual exhibition which will be launched on 22 February 2007 will consist of 4 audio/video exhibits produced by visual/audio artists:

1. 'Satellite Image of Notting Hill in 2050' produced by Dado Valentic

For this piece NASA data Satellite images combined with ground elevation data were studied to achieve results realistic to water level rises of 8 meters. This is most frequently quoted figure of sea level rises estimated by scientist. Notting Hill stands great chances in 2050 - being a Hill - it is well positioned to become one of the most wanted areas in London. It has one of the most advanced CHP station in the UK as well - Trellick Tower, and already since 2020 is completely traffic free. It is very close to one of the London's best beaches - Chelsea Beach and has great connection to Hammersmith Ferry for easy access to the City.

2. 'Bicycle Samba' produced by Sophie Clements

Bicycle will be the main mean of transport in the year 2050 in Notting Hill. Local bands building on tradition of carnival and steel bands culture have created unique style of bicycle samba that is going to dominate the sounds of the carnival in years to come.

3. '3 steps to 2050' produced by Chris Hardman

This is a piece that shows what 3 steps of lifestyle change have been adopted by inhabitants of Notting Hill 50 years ago that have eventually led to climate change slowdown.

4. 'Locating Earth's Emergency Exits' produced by Miguel Almagro

We hope you will be able to participate in this interactive eco-art exhibition and give your contribution to the cause. The venue will organise a number of events in order to raise a profile of the exhibition and the theme and will be opened to general public. The scheduled dates so far are 24 February, 3 March and 10 March. If interested to learn more about these events please contact us on the below numbers or e-mail addresses.

It is our aim to engage a number of key speakers and will inform you of their names and dates accordingly.
