Schuebbe Projects is pleased to announce Goodbye Blue Sky, the next exhibition of Per Adolfsen in the gallery in Düsseldorf.

In this second solo show at Schuebbe Projects, two paintings of dogs are among the new body of work of Danish artist Per Adofsen. These largescale works (230 x 180 cm / 180 x 140 cm) exemplify the focus of the gaze he turns on his recent subjects. There is a well-known anecdote told about Schopenhauer concerning his dogs. He was aid to take them by scolding them, saying, "You are not a dog. You are a human. A human, a human!" Once, when he related this practice to a fellow diner, this man asked Schopenhauer whether he would take it an honor to be addresses as "you dog." Schopenhauer was said to have replied that he would have nothing to say against it.

In the same generous sense, Per Adolfsen's dogs are executed in a gestural and intimate fashion, mixing delicate line, tonal modulation and spatial modeling with areas of more thickly applied, almost aggressively worked paint. Departing from a series of self-portraits at the end of 2012, the artist presents a new painterly vocabulary between cool detachment and personal reference. When the narrative details dissolve in color and line we are in the end left with the paintings themselves, which prove to be as much a pure visual experience as a reference to modernist Danish thought.
