In today's times, where Botox is omnipresent and paralyses the natural human expression it appeared delightful to let the body speak again.
On August 30 2012, the Gallery Ivo Kamm is proud to inaugurate the amazing and newly renovated premises of the former Gallery Jamileh Weber with the group show Performing the Body.
Since the beginning of the arts, artists have experimented with the body. In the past human history the limits of the ethically and aesthetically permitted have been stressed over and over. What seemed to be unimaginable a few centuries ago is completely accepted today. Nudity without a sacral or mythological background is no longer seen as scandalous.
With artworks by Madeleine Berkhemer (NL), Martin di Girolamo (AR), Alexa Meade & Sheila Vand (USA), and Luna Paiva (F/AR), Performing the Body presents a diverse array of contemporary depictions of the body. Whoever expects to see lightly dressed figures and nudes will not be disappointed. The often used German expression "Akt" = "nude" however, is derived from the Latin verb "agere" which means "to set into motion" and initially was not a reference to missing or sparse clothing, but rather to the artistic adherence of various poses. The exhibition understands the term in this original sense.
