PAINTINGS by SCOTT ZARAGOZA
Detached: A Solo Exhibition at the SaLon Gallery
On View: January 26 until February 22
Reception: January 25
'Detached', a solo exhibition of paintings by Los Angeles artist, Scott Zaragoza, will be on display at the SaLon Gallery in London, from January 26 until February 22, 2007.
Zaragoza studied fine arts at Otis College of Art and Design in Los Angeles before moving to London in February 2006. On display will be the artist's works created since his arrival in London.
Zaragoza's large-scale painting style is a combination of both photorealism d hyperrealism, and mainly depicts solitary figures on monochromatic backgrounds.
By painting on a large scale, Zaragoza aims to consume the viewer's attention with a body referential experience. "The concept of these large scale paintings stems from my experience of growing up in Los Angeles, where billboards for movies and advertisements dominate the visual landscape," Zaragoza says.
In all of Scott Zaragoza's paintings, the subject is removed from its original source and is then placed upon a colour field. The viewer is confronted with life size animals and large scale heads that are removed from their natural landscape. "My paintings depict a loss of a physical experience of nature which is now replaced by a disconnected numbness to the state of the world. There is a distinct sense of longing in the faces of my subjects."
"Music is another important medium within my work, and the type of music I listen and paint to is highly eclectic. For my exhibition at the Salon Gallery, the same music will be playing as a constant backdrop. In the Salon Gallery's uniquely intimate environment, my paintings can be experienced to the soundtrack of their making. SaLon encourages the melding of different
artistic expressions, and as an eclectic and atypical venue, provides an ideal setting where all types of art can find a forum. The gallery is structured in such a way that music, dance and performance can coexist alongside the traditional gallery function of displaying visual art."
The SaLon Gallery is located at 82 Westbourne Grove, W2 5RT, close to both Notting Hill Gate and Bayswater tube stations. Contact the gallery at 020 7221 1650.
There will be a reception for the artist on Thursday, 25 January 2007, from 6:30pm-9:30pm. The exhibition runs through February 22, 2007.
